Biogas is quite different in composition compared to natural gas, which consists primarily of methane. It consists of only 50-65 % methane. The remainder of the gas mixture is composed of several compounds, but the majority is carbon dioxide. Therefore, biogas cannot be fed directly into the gas grid and would first have to be upgraded to capture the CO\u2082 . Biogas is therefore usually converted into electricity and heat in combined heat and power plants.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In order to be able to utilize biogas as bio natural gas, it is necessary to produce the required quality. The biogas upgradation process increases the methane content while removing carbon dioxide and other undesirable components. The methane content can be increased by up to 98 %. There are various upgradation processes, including membrane processes, where different permeabilities of polymeric membrane materials are used to separate unwanted gas components from biogas. The separated carbon dioxide is mostly released into the atmosphere, because there are still hardly any profitable utilization methods.<\/p>\n

At present, it is still cheaper for companies and power plants to release CO\u2082 into the atmosphere than to invest in a plant that can capture it. For many years, there has been a global interest in CO\u2082 capture and there are numerous research approaches and processes being developed which, in principle, can also be used in other companies or power plants that want to reduce their CO\u2082 emissions. The aim of the research is to generate CO\u2082 that is so clean that it can be used, for example, to produce synthetic fuels or otherwise utilized for pharmaceutical and food industries.<\/p>\n

“If you’re able to recover CO\u2082 for resale, CO\u2082 capture is no longer just an expense, it’s a new way for companies and power plants to generate income,” says DTU Chemical Engineering’s Philp L. Fosbol, who coordinates the CO\u2082 capturing process.<\/p>\n

AGT has addtionally set new standards here in cooperation with St. Andrews, in that the initially undesirable carbon dioxide can be used as a raw material for the subsequent breakdown into high-tech materials carbon nanotubes and graphene. This creates completely new and highly attractive income opportunities for biogas plants, as well as other industrial plants that emit large amounts of carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
